Conservative Web Hosting, In Its True Sense

Conservative Web Hosting, In Its True Sense

Keypoints

You may be wondering, what on earth does conservatism have to do with web hosting? Well, I want to demystify that, if you would enjoy to read along.

First off, what prompted this article? Well, I've been watching some of the search data on one of my other websites, and I am seeing some placement on Google for the phrase "conservative web hosting." And while those keywords are mostly referring to a political stance, I want to take a different approach. I want to show how our web hosting solution is conservative in the sense of "preserving," instead of making some political stance.

In fact, as I've watched some of the bipartisan legislation and acts, what I talk about here are things that have proved to be helpful and of interest to all people, not just one side or the other.

Conservative is about Conserving

At some point, I think every human being has an instinct to preserve something. Whether it is delicious jams and jellies, a friendship, or stories from the past.

The word "conservative" comes from "conserve." The word "conserve" is an old one, and it comes from Latin. The latter part, "serve", comes from "servare", which means to preserve, save, keep, or guard. The beginning part "con," makes a stronger form of "servare." So conserve could simply mean to strongly preserve, save, keep, and guard. And that is exactly what I hope to do, but with our web hosting service.

What sort of web hosting am I talking about? Well, in this day and age, we see many big players in the web hosting field. Whether it is Bluehost or Godaddy, or an even bigger and more central player, such as AWS, Google Cloud, and Microsoft Azure. I want to preserve the great things that a small business can offer, such as customized service, agility and expertise, and apply that to the web hosting world. This is not a new idea, but it's an important idea.

Not Political!

Being someone who conserves something isn't a political statement. Rather, it's a principle that everyone applies at some point in time.

I want to help small and medium sized businesses preserve and guard their business from the larger and central players. For example, I have seen websites that were migrated into AWS, and their costs go up. There is no need for that in many cases!

Just imagine, if web hosting software became politically charged, how many good people and helpful ideas would become completely cut off from the world. I wish we could utilize the original meaning of words. Where conserving is conserving, and liberal is giving, just as God "giveth to all men liberally" (James 1:5). There is a certain aewsome-ness to the meaning of words, and that's why I pulled up the Latin meaning earlier.

Our Offering

Our website maintenance service offers web hosting that is independent, and is only tied to approved cloud providers. For example, right now we utilize some services from Vultr.com. Vultr is a privately owned company (for now), and provides a great service at a great price. So I leverage some of their services in order to build my own independent service.

We strive not to use central players. This is for three reasons: 1) our passion for servers and web hosting drives us to create our own service, 2) to avoid high operating costs and vendor lock-in, and 3) to not give more power, cash, and influence, to centralized services, thus spreading the responsibility back on the people who want to preserve that right.

Speaking of servers and web hosting, I'll plug for the current favorite operating system of choice: FreeBSD. For a period of time, I hopped between Linux distro, mostly between RedHat and Debian based systems (and Gentoo), and finally landed on FreeBSD. FreeBSD made so much sense in its layout, packaging, software ports, and preservation of tradition (ie, still uses ifconfig), that I kept using it. FreeBSD offers a great platform for web servers.

TLDR;

Yeah I get it.

If you are looking for a web host that is independent from the grasps of the centralized powers, complete with competent tech support that wants to see you succeed, we got you!

Amen & Valete!
